Why we recommend it

Tara Brach is a clinical psychologist and Buddhist teacher, and her writing sits at the intersection of those traditions in a way that feels neither watered-down nor over-spiritualised.

The book's central theme — that our default response to pain is to add a layer of self-rejection on top of it, doubling the suffering — speaks directly to clients who are particularly hard on themselves. The "RAIN" practice she introduces (Recognise, Allow, Investigate, Nurture) is one of the cleanest self-compassion frameworks we've seen.

We recommend this often to clients who notice that their inner critic runs constantly. It's also a frequent recommendation alongside trauma work, where self-blame is almost universal.

A note. This is reading material, not clinical treatment. If you’re working through something difficult, books complement therapy — they don’t replace it. Book a session with our team for personalised support.
