What a psychological consultation is

A psychological consultation is a structured conversation with a registered psychologist about something that is not working — your mood, your anxiety, a relationship, a loss, the aftermath of something that happened, or a pattern you keep repeating and cannot explain.

It is not advice-giving, and it is not a questionnaire. The first job is assessment: understanding the history, what has already been tried, and what is maintaining the problem now. From that your psychologist proposes an approach — and tells you what the evidence says about it, including how long it usually takes to help.

You are a participant in that decision, not a recipient of it. If an approach is not working, it gets changed.

What happens, step by step

Most people have never done this before. Here is the whole shape of it.

1

Before your first session

You book online, choose a time, and complete a short intake form. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, bring it — it is what makes the Medicare rebate available. You do not need a referral to be seen.

2

The initial assessment

A longer 90 minutes session. Your psychologist asks what brought you in, what you have already tried, your history, and what you want to be different. Nothing is diagnosed on the spot — the purpose is to understand the whole picture first.

3

Your treatment plan

You and your psychologist agree what to work on, which approach fits, and roughly how many sessions that usually takes. The plan is written collaboratively, so you leave knowing what happens next rather than guessing.

4

Ongoing consultations

50 minutes sessions, usually fortnightly at first and spaced further apart as things improve. Progress is reviewed openly, and the approach changes if it is not working. Telehealth is available if getting to Bella Vista is difficult.

Common questions

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can book a psychological consultation directly. A referral matters only for the Medicare rebate: with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP you can claim a rebate on a set number of sessions each calendar year. Without one, you can still be seen — you simply pay the full fee.

How long is a session, and what does it cost?

An initial assessment runs 90 minutes at $350. Ongoing consultations are 50 minutes at $220. Medicare rebates are available with a Mental Health Treatment Plan. The full fee schedule, including NDIS, WorkCover and CTP arrangements, is on our fees page.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on what you are working on, and it is discussed openly in your treatment plan rather than committed to in advance. Some concerns settle in six to ten sessions; longer-standing or more complex difficulties take longer. You are never locked into a number.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes, with the limited exceptions every Australian psychologist is bound by: a serious and imminent risk to your safety or someone else’s, a court subpoena, or a mandatory reporting obligation involving a child at risk. Your psychologist explains these in the first session before you share anything substantial.

Can I have my sessions by telehealth?

Yes. Consultations are available by secure video as well as in person at Bella Vista. Medicare telehealth rebates apply under the same Mental Health Treatment Plan conditions as in-person sessions.

What if I am not sure the psychologist is the right fit?

Fit matters more than almost anything else in therapy, and it is reasonable to raise it. You can ask to be matched with a different psychologist in the practice, and asking will not affect your care. Our practitioners differ in approach, languages spoken and the ages they work with.
