How to Access Psychological Services in Bella Vista — A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting the mental health support you need shouldn’t feel like navigating a maze. Whether you’re reaching out for the first time or returning to therapy, this guide explains every pathway to accessing psychological services at Potentialz Unlimited in Bella Vista — clearly, step by step.

Step 1: Medicare Mental Health Care Plans

The most common starting point. If you have a mental health concern, visit your GP and ask for a Mental Health Treatment Plan. When approved, this plan provides Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year — reducing the cost of each session to your out-of-pocket gap only.

How to get started:

  1. Book a longer appointment with your GP (let them know you’d like to discuss mental health)
  2. Your GP prepares the plan and writes a referral to a psychologist
  3. Bring the referral to your first appointment — we handle the Medicare billing

The Medicare rebate amount varies by clinician type — sessions with a clinical psychologist attract a higher rebate than those with a registered psychologist. Contact your provider to confirm the current rebate applicable to your appointments.

Step 2: Private Health Insurance

Many private health funds cover psychological services under their extras or mental health benefits. Coverage and rebate amounts vary by fund and policy level.

Before your appointment:

  • Call your fund and ask: “Does my extras cover psychology sessions, and what is my rebate per session?”
  • Confirm whether a GP referral is required under your policy
  • Check your annual limit and whether it resets on 1 January or your policy anniversary

We process private health rebates through HICAPS at the time of your appointment — no paperwork needed from you.

Step 3: WorkCover and CTP Claims

If your mental health difficulties are related to a work injury or a motor vehicle accident, you may be fully covered through these schemes.

WorkCover (iCare)

Treatment for psychological injury caused by or worsened by your workplace is funded through the NSW workers compensation scheme. A referral from your treating GP or specialist is required before your first psychology appointment.

CTP (Green Slip / Motor Accidents)

If you experienced psychological trauma following a motor vehicle accident in NSW, CTP insurance covers psychological treatment. Your GP or treating specialist provides the initial referral.

In both cases, contact us before your first appointment so we can confirm approval and billing arrangements with the relevant insurer.

Step 4: NDIS (Self-Managed and Plan-Managed Participants)

We welcome NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. We are not a registered NDIS provider, so we are unable to see NDIA-managed participants.

If you are self-managed or plan-managed, sessions are charged at the current NDIS schedule rate for psychology supports, and we provide itemised invoices for you to claim reimbursement through your NDIS plan. Psychology services are typically funded under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living supports.

If you are unsure of your management type, check your NDIS plan document or contact your plan manager or Support Coordinator.

Step 5: Private (Self-Funded)

If you prefer to pay privately — without a Medicare plan or insurer involved — you are always welcome to book directly. Private clients enjoy full flexibility: no referral required, no session limits, and complete confidentiality.

Our standard session fee is $220 per 50-minute session. Comprehensive ADHD assessments are quoted separately.

Step 6: Find the Right Psychologist for Your Needs

Not every psychologist is the right fit for every concern. When researching providers, consider:

  • Specialisation — Does the psychologist have specific training in what you’re dealing with (trauma, ADHD, couples, eating disorders)?
  • Experience — How long have they been practising, and with which populations?
  • Approach — Do they use evidence-based modalities like CBT, EMDR, ACT, or Gottman Method?
  • Language — For multicultural families, working with a psychologist who speaks your language can be transformative

At Potentialz Unlimited, our team speaks English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, and Kannada — and we have specialist experience across trauma, ADHD, couples therapy, child psychology, and forensic psychology.

Step 7: Book Your First Appointment

Once you’ve confirmed your funding pathway and chosen a provider, booking is straightforward.

At Potentialz Unlimited:

When you book, have your referral (if applicable), health fund card, and relevant claim details ready. We’ll guide you through the rest.
